This verse comes from Peter’s first epistle (letter), which is fifty percent instruction and fifty percent pep talk. He was writing to new, mostly gentile churches in far away places, which was normally Paul's tribe. Peter knew that persecution of the Church was growing and he hoped to encourage these churches and strengthen their faith. Just as James does in the fifth chapter of his book, Peter includes a phrase attributed to Solomon in his proverbs written hundreds of years earlier: “… Love covers a multitude of sins.” (Proverbs 10:12). This is one of many evidences for scripture age and dating, and it bolsters the authority of early scripture written several hundred, even thousands of years before. We see Godly men, (including and especially this one guy named Jesus...) studying and quoting Old Testament scripture time and again, and in this case, using it to bring credibility and meaning to their contemporary teachings. Godly wisdom… forever wise!
