Paul’s letters normally include his upcoming plans; where he hopes to travel next, who and when he hopes to visit, but it’s clear in his second letter to Timothy that he is no longer making future plans. His execution is imminent. In fact, Paul pleads with Timothy to gather Mark along with Paul’s writings, scrolls, and a cloak, and hurry to be with him in Rome. Scholars believe this letter was written around AD 67, which would mean that Nero, debauched emperor and notorious Christian hater, had already launched a furious campaign of Christian persecution. This certainly factored into the other subject of Paul’s bittersweet message: God has given you great strength, use it to endure the upcoming persecution and suffering, be bold, stay faithful, and never be ashamed of the gospel nor of Paul himself. This letter is steeped in emotion as Paul addresses the one whom he has claimed and loved as an adopted son. Historians believe these to be the last recorded words of Paul, and sadly, we don’t know if Timothy and Mark arrived in time to be with their friend before he was beheaded.
